Members of FCIHR
assembled at the National Gallery of Canada, in Ottawa, this
past September for our annual Public Forum.
This year, Dr. Joseph B. Martin, Dean, Harvard School of Medicine and
inaugural winner of The Henry G. Friesen Prize in Health Research,
delivered a lecture entitled "Brain Disease: Health Research Policy for
the Public Good."
This lecture was followed by a reception in the Watercourt Foyer
and dinner at the Rideau Club.

Dr. Martin's presentation, entitled Brain Disease: Health Research
Policy for the Public Good, was a well-paced blend of technical
information, ideas, philosophies, and reflections on personal
experiences and achievements that easily held the audiences attention.
Lively discussion followed the Public Forum at the Coffee reception in
the Watercourt Foyer.

An Award dinner at the Rideau Club followed the Public Forum and Reception
and lively discussion continued throughout the evening.
Presentation of the inaugural Henry G. Friesen International Prize in
Health Research, September 26, 2006.
Dr. Alan Bernstein, President of CIHR and Dr. Joseph B. Martin,
inaugural Prize Winner reviewed the events of the day before dinner.
Dr. Dorothy Pringle, member of the Friesen Advisory Committee, and
member of the both FCIHR and CAHS Boards, offered a toast "To Science
and Health".
Hon. Steven Fletcher addressed the gathering and then discussed health
matters with Dr. Paul Armstrong (foreground) while Dr. Henry Friesen and
Dr. Martin Godbout, President of Genome Canada (Podium sponsor),
chatted.
Two eminent leaders exchange ideas: Dr. Henry G. Friesen, Distinguished
Professor Emeritus for whom The Prize was named and
Dr. Emőke Szathmáry,
President and Vice Chancellor, University of Manitoba and dinner
co-host.
Dr. Pavel Hamet and Dr. Arthur Carty shared perspectives.
Dr. Zul Merali, President and CEO, Institute of Mental Health Research
(Supporter sponsor) discussed the Public Forum and with Mr. Bernie
Lucht, Producer, CBC Radio One.
Dr. Ken Shine, Executive Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs, University
of Texas System, and Dr. Peter Nicholson President, Canadian Academies
of Science, both long-time friends and colleagues of Dr. Martin, enjoyed
reminiscing.
Dr. Carol Richards, CAHS Board member becomes acquainted with
Dr. Johanne Tremblay, newly elected member of the CAHS Board.
