Friends of CIHR is pleased to announce that Sir Mark Walport, Chief Executive, UK Research & Innovation, and internationally renowned visionary health research planner is the recipient of the 2020 Henry G. Friesen International Prize in Health Research. Dr. Walport joins an illustrious group of scientists, educators, academic leaders and health policy experts.

Biographical Highlights

Toronto – June 1, 2020 – Professor Sir Mark Walport, FRS, FMed Sci, FRCP, is Chief Executive of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), which brings together the 7 research councils, Innovate UK and Research England with a budget of more than £7 billion (~ $12B CAD). He is a champion of fundamental science in health research, engineering, technology and innovation.

Sir Mark obtained his clinical and PhD degrees at Cambridge University. His scientific interests were in the molecular and genetic basis of inflammatory diseases of the joint and he trained clinically as a Rheumatologist. Prior to entering government, Sir Mark was Professor of Medicine and Chair of the Division of Medicine at Imperial College, London, Hammersmith Hospital.

Through his affiliation with the Wellcome Trust (2000-2013), Sir Mark Walport made major contributions first as Governor and then for 10 years, as Director. He supported some of the most important initiatives in UK biomedicine and saw the completion of sequencing of the Human Genome at the Sanger Centre and championed some of the world’s first policies on Open Access Science. During this time, the Wellcome Trust became the most influential independent funder of medical research in UK, and amongst the most influential globally in biomedical research policy. Much of this was due to Sir Mark’s visionary leadership and perseverance.

In 2013, he was appointed the UK government’s Chief Scientific Advisor and Head of the government’s Office for Science. In this role, he provided advice to government at the highest level on a range of crucial scientific topics across all scientific domains. This clearly illustrated Mark’s profile and deep understanding of the science agenda, not only in the Life Sciences, but also in important areas such as climate change, digital infrastructure and agriculture.

Throughout his career Sir Mark has been a vocal supporter for the need to take a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach to tackling the major problems facing society. In 2016, Sir Paul Nurse was asked by government to examine how the UK funding environment might be re-shaped by examining the funding to each of the research councils in relation to their ability to work across disciplines. The idea emerged of an entity called, “UK Research and Innovation” and in 2018, Sir Mark became the first Chief Executive of this bold new concept.

Throughout his career, Sir Mark has also been an ardent supporter of the arts and a popular TV personality, as spokesperson for science and innovation. Sir Mark has been the recipient of many honours and prizes, including ten Honorary Degrees and a Knighthood in 2009.

The Henry G. Friesen International Prize in Health Research, established in 2005 by the Friends of Canadian Institutes of Health Research (FCIHR), recognizes exceptional innovation by a visionary health leader of international stature. The $35,000 Friesen Prize is awarded annually. Sir Mark Walport will deliver public talks this fall and in 2021 in conjunction with the Friesen Prize Program. Toronto – Le 1er juin 2020 – Le professeur sir Mark Walport, FRS, FMed Sci, FRCP, est directeur général de la UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) qui réunit les 7 conseils de recherche et innove la recherche au Royaume-Uni grâce à un budget de plus de 7 milliards de livres sterling (~ 12 milliards de $ CA). C’est un champion de la science fondamentale dans les domaines de la recherche en santé, du génie, de la technologie et de l’innovation.

Sir Mark Walport a obtenu ses diplômes d’études cliniques et doctorales de l’Université de Cambridge. Ses champs d’intérêt scientifique étaient la base moléculaire et génétique des maladies articulaires inflammatoires et il a reçu une formation clinique de rhumatologue. Avant d’entrer au gouvernement, sir Walport était professeur de médecine et président de la Division de médecine de l’Imperial College de Londres, Hammersmith Hospital.

Grâce à son affiliation au Wellcome Trust (2000-2013), sir Walport a eu d’importants apports à titre de gouverneur, puis pendant 10 années, de directeur. Il a appuyé certaines des initiatives les plus importantes de la biomédecine au Royaume-Uni, voyant à l’achèvement du séquençage du génome humain au Centre Sanger et prônant certaines des premières politiques mondiales sur la science en accès libre. À cette époque, le Wellcome Trust est devenu le bailleur de fonds indépendant le plus influent en recherche médicale au Royaume-Uni et l’un des plus influents à l’échelle mondiale en politique de recherche biomédicale. Ce progrès est en grande partie attribuable au leadership visionnaire et à la persévérance de sir Walport.

En 2013, il a été nommé conseiller scientifique en chef du gouvernement britannique et directeur du Bureau des sciences du gouvernement. À ce titre, il a fourni des conseils au plus haut niveau de l’État sur un éventail de sujets scientifiques cruciaux dans tous les domaines scientifiques. Cela illustre clairement le profil de Mark et sa compréhension approfondie du programme scientifique, non seulement en sciences de la vie, mais aussi dans les domaines importants tels les changements climatiques, l’infrastructure numérique et l’agriculture.

Tout au long de sa carrière, sir Walport a été un fervent partisan de la nécessité d’adopter une approche collaborative et multidisciplinaire face aux principaux problèmes auxquels se heurte la société. En 2016, le gouvernement a demandé à Sir Paul Nurse d’examiner comment pourrait être remodelé le milieu du financement au Royaume-Uni en scrutant le budget de chacun des conseils de recherche quant à leur capacité de travail interdisciplinaire. L’idée a émané d’une entité appelée « UK Research and Innovation » et, en 2018, sir Walport est devenu le premier directeur général de ce nouveau concept audacieux.

Au fil de sa carrière, sir Walport a également été un fervent partisan des arts et une personnalité populaire de la télévision en tant que porte-parole de la science et de l’innovation. Il a reçu de nombreux honneurs et prix, dont dix diplômes honorifiques et un titre de chevalier en 2009.

Le Prix international de la recherche en santé Henry G. Friesen (de 35 000 $), créé en 2005 par les Amis des Instituts canadiens de recherche en santé (AIRSC), reconnaît l’innovation exceptionnelle d’un chef de file visionnaire en santé de calibre international. Ce prix est décerné chaque année. Sir Mark Walport prononcera des conférences publiques cet automne et en 2021 dans le cadre du programme du prix Friesen.
